Also known as vin brulé, or mulled wine, this hot drink is a cozy winter favorite. A great, grown-up alternative to hot chocolate, it’s the perfect drink for the holidays and beyond.

hot spiced wine

1 bottle dry red wine
3 whole cloves
1⁄4 teaspoon ground cardamom
2 cinnamon sticks
1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated
2 tablespoons sugar
zest of 1 orange

In a large pot over medium heat, combine the wine and 2 cups of water. Add the cloves, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, sugar and orange zest and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes to allow the spices to infuse the wine. To serve, ladle the hot spiced wine into 4 individual glasses or mugs. Serves 4
